This street is named after the Kosovo Girl (Kosovska Devojka), the main character of a famous Serbian folk epic poem.
The street was originally called Devojačka Street from 1872 to 1939. In 1939, it was renamed after the Kosovo Girl, and it has kept that name ever since.
The poem tells the story of a young woman searching for her fiancé and other loved ones after the Battle of Kosovo (1389), one of the most important events in Serbian history. Her grief, compassion, and strength made her a lasting symbol of loss, hope, and resilience in Serbian culture.
The Kosovo Girl has inspired many Serbian writers, painters, and sculptors, making her one of the country's most recognizable cultural figures.
